The sidewalk in Brazil is heavily contested. Historically, not much attention has been given to sidewalk quality by local governments while residents have appropriated them to their own insights. Together with the municipality of São Bernardo and a variety of local stakeholders Posad – i.c.w. Ibyrá – developed a working method for sidewalk transformation in which a smart participative strategy stands central. The project resulted in a long-term vision and short term action plan that will be applied in the coming years to transform São Bernardo into one of the most pedestrian friendly cities in Brazil.
We are working on a web-based application with which residents and public servants can easily share and consult regulations as well as best practices. The method can easily be specified for other municipalities.
